Director of Membership

Purpose: The Director of Membership Development is a member of the Senior Program Staff and has primary responsibility for working with the Membership Ministry in creating a culture of radical welcome for newcomers and visitors, providing a clear pathway to membership, and offering opportunities for visitors and members to learn about and become engaged in the life of the congregation.

Reports to: Lead Minister

Supervises: No direct supervision of other staff. Coordinates volunteers.

FLSA: Non-exempt from overtime.

Work Schedule: 25 hours/week, to include 3 Sundays per month, and some evenings and Saturdays as needed.

Responsibilities and Duties

Mission and Vision

Collaborate with the Lead Minister in carrying out the Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan of the Fellowship.
Guide and manage the implementation of the congregation’s Racial Equity and Inclusion (REI) Theory of Change throughout all aspects of work, including administrative, work with lay leaders, visitors, members, staff, and in all programming.
Provide input to the staff and lay leadership on the goals and activities of the Membership Ministry, and participate in effectively managing growth.

Radical Welcome

Serve as the primary contact for newcomers, visitors, and new members on Sunday mornings and in response to general inquiries about ERUUF and Unitarian Universalism resulting from in-person visitors, email, phone, and website inquiries.
Manage systems and coordinate the welcome and response to newcomers and visitors before and after services on Sunday morning, including welcome literature, brochures, name tags, and visitor classes.
Oversee a welcoming and effective Sunday morning Fellowship Hour for visitors and members, that includes refreshments and “tabling” for the congregation’s groups.
Work with the Lead Minister to develop and guide the implementation of a pathway to membership, including classes, and book signing events.
Recruit and lead a volunteer Membership Ministry Team that has clear roles and responsibilities in support of visitor and new member activities.
Member Engagement, Service, and Connection
Develop and manage New Member Sunday celebrations that: 1) engage new members in a covenanting ceremony with the congregation and 2) provide a gathering with staff and key leaders to welcome and celebrate the most recent cohort(s) of new members.
Develop and manage a process for following up with new members through their first six months of membership.
Collaborate with Senior Staff and lay leaders to develop and implement activities, classes, and events that facilitate member connection and engagement.
Develop and oversee processes for collecting information on member interests and talents, and matching individuals to potential service opportunities.
Collaborate with Senior Staff and appropriate lay leaders to identify service opportunities; assist with volunteer recruitment.
As needed, write job descriptions for volunteer positions and post on website.
Oversee and manage Fellowship events, including Connections Fair and Fall Member Relations Outreach; serve as staff partner for Holiday Meals/Receptions (Thanksgiving, Jazz for the Holidays, Christmas Eve, Kwanzaa).

Administrative

Work with Lead and Executive Ministers on administrative record-keeping of formal Membership Roll for annual UUA Certification, UU World subscriptions, congregational meetings called by ERUUF’s Boardof Trustees, and in response to appropriate internal and external requests for membership data.
Track visitor information in ERUUF database; develop and manage systems for follow-up, e.g., response to Welcome Card information, minister welcome letters, printed nametags, etc.
Maintain an accurate and up-to-date database of all individuals’ membership status, demographics, and service interests / activities.
Work with Executive Minister in developing and managing the Membership Ministry’s annual budget.
Communicate clear and relevant information to staff, volunteers, and the congregation on membership-related activities via tools such as: e-news, bulletin boards, announcements and brochures, grouplistservs, website content, and social media.
Participate in Senior Program Staff meetings, periodic trainings, and other staff meetings and retreats as needed; attend and participate in new member activities and events.

Education and Experience

College degree or equivalent experience.
3 years’ work experience in an office environment.
Knowledge of and commitment to Unitarian Universalist principles and values.
Strong computer, software and Internet skills; solid working knowledge of Google docs/calendar, MS Office Suite to include Word and Excel, and the ability to learn new software and database applications.
