New Directors Elected to Statewide Nonprofit Board

Raleigh, NC – The Board of Directors of the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits has elected four new members to provide strategic direction and growth around the Center’s mission to educate, connect, and advocate for North Carolina nonprofits: Sabrina Brooks with Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation, Kim Chambers with TROSA, Jamilla Hawkins with NC Pandemic Recovery Office, and Deetra Watson with Blackman & Sloop, CPAs, P.A.

Sabrina Brooks joined Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation in 2010. As Vice President, she works closely with a volunteer board of directors and Cape Fear Valley Health leadership to secure community and grant support for the not-for-profit 1,000+ bed, 8-hospital regional health system. Prior to CFVHF, she had a successful 20-year career in the financial services and business management industry. She holds a BS in Business Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill, MBA from Western Carolina University, and Certified Fund Raising Executive [CFRE] designation. A native of Raleigh, she is married to William Brooks, a banker, and they have two grown sons: Will, a seaman in the US Coast Guard and Mack, a business analyst with a transportation logistics firm.

Kim Chambers has over 25 years’ accounting and finance experience in a variety of industries including Big 6, custom home building, professional sports teams, and nonprofits. She brought her expertise in streamlining finance procedures to the nonprofit Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers, Inc. (TROSA) in 2011, and has served as its Chief Financial Officer since 2014. She is a CPA and holds a BS from the University of Maryland University College. With a passion for helping nonprofits thrive, she has served the American Cancer Society in a number of volunteer leadership roles for regional chapters and was recognized with its Relay for Life Award. She has volunteered as a soccer coach for the Chatham Soccer League. She currently serves on the NC Association of Certified Public Accountants Not-for-Profit Committee. She is a graduate of Leadership North Carolina Class XXIV and received the Nonprofit CFO of the Year Award from the Triangle Business Journal in 2014.

Jamilla Hawkins serves as Chief of Staff of the North Carolina Pandemic Recovery Office where she oversees the reporting, communications, and outreach functions of the office. A native of southeastern NC, she most recently worked at the NC Rural Center to strengthen food systems statewide by promoting and providing resources to food business entrepreneurs, local farmers, and community leaders. In addition to her work, she serves as a board member of the Conservation Trust for North Carolina and the Wake County Community Foundation, and a commissioner of the NC Martin Luther King Jr. Commission. She earned a BA in Political Science from UNC-Greensboro and an MPA from NC Central University.

Deetra Watson, CPA, joined Blackman & Sloop, CPAs, P.A. as a staff accountant and quickly climbed the ranks to her current position as a Principal in the assurance department. In this role, she helps nonprofit and educational clients identify opportunities to strengthen their financial governance, business strategy, and operational efficiencies, and anticipate future trends and drive innovation. A devoted member of both her professional and local communities, she has authored articles for industry publications and presented seminars on a variety of nonprofit accounting and management topics. She volunteers her accounting services to local small businesses and community organizations, and serves on boards for various local nonprofits. Raised in Durham, she continues to reside in her hometown with her two sons. When she isn’t volunteering or preparing audits, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, playing sports, and getting in some stress-relieving exercise.

“We’re pleased to welcome our new board members and the diverse perspectives they bring from their local communities,” said Deviré Robinson, Vice President, Philanthropic Advancement at Foundation For The Carolinas and Center board chair. “Their experiences and expertise are invaluable as the Center continues to support and strengthen nonprofits across North Carolina and build collaborations among sectors.”
