Quantitative Researcher & Data Analyst

Southern Coalition for Social Justice (SCSJ) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded in August 2007 and works across the South. Our mission is to promote justice by partnering with communities of color and economically disadvantaged communities to defend and advance their political, social, and economic rights. SCSJ’s focus areas are community-driven, and currently include voting rights, justice system reform, and environmental justice. Our model of practice requires team members who work well with grassroots organizations and in collaboration with other civil rights groups, and who have deep passion for and commitment to fighting for inclusive political participation.

Position Summary:
SCSJ has an immediate opening for a Quantitative Researcher and Data Analyst to support SCSJ’s voting rights, justice system reform, and environmental justice practice areas as well as grassroots partners across the South.  

Responsibilities Include:
-Conduct quantitative data collection, research, analysis, and spatial visualization in support of litigation and policy advocacy in the voting rights, justice system reform, and environmental justice practice areas.
-Provide grassroots community organizations with data driven insight and analysis to advance their social, political, and economic rights.
-Build relationships and work with partner organizations, government agencies, elected officials, and subject matter experts.
-Represent SCSJ externally at research conferences and significant gatherings in order to discuss our work and build the reputation of the research team and the organization as whole.

Qualifications Include: 
-Bachelor’s degree with at least 1 year of experience or Master’s degree.
-Certificate or formal coursework in GIS and/or data science with experience using open source software preferred.
-Proficiency in one or more of the following is required:
GIS software (QGIS, ArcGIS, Maptitude)
Data analysis software (Excel, Tableau, RStudio)
Programming languages (R, Python, SQL)
-Proficiency in one or more of the following is preferred:
Web mapping and visualization tools (Leaflet, Mapbox, D3)
Web development languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
Jupyter Notebooks
Git and GitHub
Docker
-Demonstrated proficiency with research and analysis, including the ability to synthesize data and draw informed, accurate conclusions, with experience tailoring deliverables to a range of internal and external audiences.
-Ability to approach a project creatively, problem solve, exercise discretion and independent judgement, and work with minimum supervision.
-Flexibility to respond to rapidly changing priorities and a variety of requests from multiple practice areas.

Salary and Benefits: 
The Quantitative Researcher and Data Analyst’s starting salary range is $55,000 to $70,000 per year, commensurate with experience, and includes comprehensive health and retirement plans. 

Location: 
SCSJ’s physical office is in Durham, North Carolina. SCSJ is a hybrid work environment; staff are expected to work in our Durham office Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week with remote flexibility on Monday and Friday.
