We Educate
We sponsor research about Durham's trees and educate ourselves and others about the importance of trees to Durham. Trees create health, wealth, and happiness for Durham residents. In the face of income and health inequality, climate change, and aggressive development, now more than ever we must understand the importance of our trees and how to make them healthy, sustainable, and socially just. To this end, we initiate and disseminate research about Durham's trees and their impact on Durham, host educational events, and provide many other opportunities for folks to learn about their trees.

We Advocate
We advocate for policies that will preserve forests, enhance tree planting, and address environmental justice. Because we have the weakest tree preservation standards in the Triangle, Durham loses between 80-100% of our forests on each property that is developed. Unlike other cities, Durham doesn't require developers to plant street trees next to the street, creating a future filled with the hot pavement. In our established neighborhoods, Durham's trees are inequitably distributed and represent a physical history of racist redlining practices. We are losing hundreds of thousands of trees to new development, and need investment in trees where people live now. Losing these trees and forests contributes to climate change, extreme heat, air pollution, poor health, higher crime, and broken communities. We advocate for the City and County to require tree preservation and planting during development and to invest in planting trees in low-income neighborhoods and communities of color.

We Plant & Care for Trees
All people deserve trees, and all people should have the opportunity to plant and care for them. Many places in Durham need new trees, and we are here to help plant and care for them. During tree planting season, we plant trees at schools, community centers, and other public spaces. We also host tree give-a-ways so people can plant trees at their house. During the summer, we care for our public trees through individual actions and our TreeKeepers program. We work with individuals and communities to bring trees into their neighborhoods and care for them.
