President's Message: Ringing in the New

Jeanne Canina Tedrow, President & CEO, North Carolina Center for Nonprofits

Happy New Year – 2019!

The message I heard most often on my travels across North Carolina is the need for relevant services to help nonprofits. Operational costs like internet and web services are getting more expensive, yet are now fundamental to a nonprofit’s budget. Health insurance is increasingly unaffordable, making hiring the best people difficult. Making connections with nonprofit professionals who have similar job responsibilities around the state is not easy; neither is finding affordable, local resources for training. Throughout 2018, the Center has been working toward finding solutions to these very real needs for our Members.

I’m excited to share that during the first six months of 2019 we will:

  • Launch a new online communications platform for our Members. “Center Connect” will make it easier to find, meet, and connect with similar nonprofit professionals (and even volunteers) anywhere in North Carolina.
  • Release a new edition of Principles and Practices, a 12-unit nonprofit management guide that promises to be a dynamic tool helpful to anyone who works in and with a nonprofit.
  • Launch our new Duke Energy Professional Development Series, bringing affordable workshops to eight local chambers of commerce around the state.
  • Launch "Future Forward Nonprofits," a program that will promote leadership sustainability with a race equity lens as a mainstream practice among NC nonprofits.
  • Announce new business partners to save nonprofits more money on their back-office support functions, particularly in technology.
  • Advance our plans to offer group health insurance for nonprofits – hopefully in 2020!

As we introduce these new programs and services – and consider new partnerships to serve you – we will continue many of our core programs in 2019. Consider taking advantage of one or all of these services in the new year.

Nonprofit Town Halls, Winter 2019: Taking place in six locations, choose one to learn about the latest U.S. and North Carolina public policies affecting nonprofits, and tips and tools to be an effective advocate.

Walking the Talk, Spring 2019: With five new workshops and webinars on equity and inclusion for nonprofit leaders, these professional development programs are essential for learning about race equity issues and solutions.

Pro Bono Consultants: We have a growing number of professionals who genuinely want to help you!  Last year, 303 Members took advantage of this free consulting program, asking their specific questions in accounting, legal matters, human resources, and more.

NC Nonprofit Careers: Our jobs board is among the most-visited places on our website. Little wonder: we had over 685 job postings in 2017-18. This is really the go-to place to find candidates for job openings at your nonprofit!

I wish you and your nonprofit much success in 2019. Amid all the challenges we face, keeping focused on the great work you do will make all the difference.
