Democracy North Carolina (Democracy NC) is a nonpartisan organization that uses research, organizing, and advocacy to increase voter participation, reduce the influence of big money in politics, and achieve a government that is truly of, by and for the people. For 25 years, this 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and its predecessor Democracy South has taken on powerful institutions and political leaders and promoted reforms that expand public involvement in the political process.

Now, Democracy NC is entering a new era under the leadership of a new Executive Director and a strong Board of Directors. At this important juncture, the future Operations Director will play a critical role by leading the effective administration of this dynamic statewide organization.

Democracy North Carolina has a budget of $2 million and a full-time staff of 17, five of whom are organizers located in field offices across the state, as well as 10 part-time positions.

Position Responsibilities
The Operations Director will lead the key organizational systems including human resources, financial management, organizational planning and assessment, and operations. The position also supports the Executive Director in coordinating the work of the Board. The Operations Director reports to the Executive Director.

HR AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT
● Lead the maintenance of a work environment that attracts and motivates a top-quality, diverse staff.
● Oversee human resources activity including maintaining job descriptions, monitoring staff work plans, coordination of staff hiring and orientation, and annual employee review processes. Ensure quality management of employee benefits, including health care.
● Support implementation and use of staff development opportunities.
● Ensure compliance with all HR standards and legal requirements. Also assist as appropriate with conflict resolution.

FINANCES
● Oversee the development and management of the organization budget.
● Monitor financial management practices to ensure compliance with all finance standards and legal requirements.
● Maintain current database on institutional funding (grants, non-individual donations).

ORGANIZATIONAL PLANNING AND EVALUATION
● Support the Executive Director by coordinating staff planning logistics and activities including annual and ongoing meetings, as well as reports on status/progress toward adopted goals. This includes an organization Evaluation Plan/Report that documents impact.
● Facilitate/participate in Directors’ Team meetings.

OPERATIONS
● Review and keep current all organization policies and procedures, according to nonprofit best practice standards, including maintaining a current personnel manual.
● Plan and manage contracts and relationships with consultants, including the financial auditor.
● Assess, develop and maintain quality IT capabilities and equipment, including relationship and contract with IT management firm.
● Facilities planning, oversight and management including ensuring ongoing maintenance of quality work spaces and equipment in the main Durham office and field locations.
● Supervise staff that assists in carrying out key operational responsibilities (financial and administrative).

Compensation range is $56,000-$70,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience, and includes a generous benefit package.
