North Carolina Center for Nonprofits Initiates
Storm Preparedness and Resiliency Program for Nonprofits
Raleigh, NC ‒ The North Carolina Center for Nonprofits is among 65 grant recipients selected by Duke Energy to help North Carolina communities increase their response capabilities for future weather events with advance preparation and planning.
With this funding, the Center will create an education program for North Carolina nonprofits on storm preparedness and resiliency that includes training, easy access to resources, templates and examples of preparedness plans, and expanded partnerships with state-based experts.
“Because nonprofits have come to be regarded as a critical civic infrastructure essential for delivering of a range of social services, there is a need to invest in nonprofit disaster resilience so they can significantly increase their ability to provide assistance and services in the event of a disaster,” says Jeanne Tedrow, President and CEO of the Center.
As part of the education program, the Center will publish a comprehensive storm resiliency toolkit and disaster plan templates as a central source of information for nonprofit disaster planning that include action steps to take before and after a major weather event.
The Center will partner with the Nonprofit Risk Management Center (NRMC), a national nonprofit that enables nonprofit leaders to identify and manage risks that threaten their missions and operations, to present several webinars and workshops around the state on storm preparedness planning, and a workshop on storm preparedness at the Center’s 2019 Conference for North Carolina’s Nonprofits in December.
The Center will also facilitate ongoing dialogue and information sharing, especially through Center Connect, our online nonprofit community, where nonprofits can share plans, receive continued professional development, ask questions of colleagues, and learn more from storm preparedness experts.
“As the state’s only organization committed to serving all 501(c)(3) nonprofits, the Center is ideally suited to present this education program on storm resiliency,” says Tedrow. “We can leverage state-level partnerships to plan the best possible programs with NRMC and amplify these resources through regional and state associations.”
