Director of Finance

Objective: Our new Director of Finance will serve as a key member of the agency’s leadership team and as a trusted partner and team leader, playing a hands-on role in strategic decision-making and the agency’s finance and accounting operations. HNH is growing in three critical ways: 1) responding to the growing number of vulnerable neighbors in Durham with expanded services 2) improving our services in order to improve outcomes for our clients; and 3) growing staff and organizational capacity through expansion, new and improved resources, and an intentional focus on strengthening our operations and finance functions.

The ideal candidate for this position will be a skilled and strategic professional, able to lead teams, mentor staff, ensure the agency’s financial and accounting functions are efficient and effective, and represent the agency with partners including auditors, funders, vendors, and other key stakeholders. The Director of Finance will manage a complex balance sheet with a dynamic future, numerous revenue streams, and a $3.5 million annual budget and total assets of more than $5 million.

Status: Full-time, Exempt


o Plan, develop, organize, implement, lead, direct and evaluate agency’s fiscal function and performance overseeing a growing budget of approximately $3,500,000.
o Participate in the development and execution of HNH’s plans and activities as a partner and key member of the agency’s leadership team.
o Provide timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports and financial trends to assist Executive Director, Board of Directors and leadership team in decision-making and goal execution.
o Develop, enhance, implement, oversee, and enforce financial policies and procedures of the organization.
o Ensure financial operations comply with local, state, and federal laws, and generally accepted accounting principles; and that transactions are timely and accurate.
o Provide technical financial advice and knowledge to Executive Director, Board members, leadership team, and staff members.
o Provide leadership and support to the Board Treasurer, Finance Committee, and Audit Committee.
o Lead and oversee agency and department budget development and monitoring, providing continual improvement through education of staff, especially managers, on financial issues impacting their budgets.
o Provide leadership and strategic financial input on decision making issues affecting the agency and to ensure best practices are utilized and that resources are leveraged and deployed in the most effective way to accomplish goals of the organization.
o Develop reliable cash flow projection processes and reporting mechanisms.
o Optimize handling of bank and deposit relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to meet operating needs.
o Work collaboratively with the Executive Director and HR Manager to ensure compliance, accuracy, and timeliness of payroll processes and reports.
o Comply with IRS rules, AICPA guidelines, as well as federal, state, and local laws. Ensure that forms 990, 1099, state sales tax filings, property tax listings, and quarterly payroll taxes are filed accurately and on a timely basis.
o Oversee financial and operational audits, identify opportunities for improved efficiencies, and supervise implementation of improvements to internal controls and operating procedures.
o Develop a team-based environment to motivate and inspire staff to work collaboratively toward the agency’s vision and strategic goals, meet and exceed established performance goals - all with an eye toward improving client outcomes.
o Lead, manage, develop and evaluate members of the agency finance team.
o Work collaboratively with resource generation and community engagement team in their efforts to secure adequate funding for the agency, including proposal writing and partnering with Director of Development to steward funding relationships.

Education and Preferred Qualifications
o Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting is required. Masters degree in accounting, finance, or related field strongly preferred.
o Minimum 5 years’ experience in a finance leadership position is required. Management experience in a nonprofit or government agency is strongly preferred.
o Experience with affordable housing a plus.
o Excellent skills in financial and business analysis, interpretation of data and application of data analysis.
o Excellent verbal and written communication skills and presentation skills.
o Ability to clearly present complicated financial information, reports and advice in an understandable manner.
o Must be able to initiate ideas, plans, and strategies, to motivate others to action, and ot organize and carry out multi-faceted workload.
o Proficient in agency systems including but not limited to Microsoft Office 365 products.
o Proficient in financial software. Financial Edge experience strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and utilize new software.
o Sense of drive and urgency with excellent time management and organizational skills with ability to carry out a variety of responsibilities with multiple priorities and deadlines.
o Ability to provide leadership to others and work calmly and efficiently in stressful situations.
o Demonstrated ability to build, lead, manage, evaluate and develop team and team members.
o Reliable and punctual attendance and willingness and ability to work varied hours, including occasional evening and weekend meetings and events.
o Strong relationship builder with the ability to find common ground, build consensus, and strengthen collaboration among diverse stakeholders.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience and abilities. Benefits package offered.

Salary Range: $80,000-$88,000
