Position:  President/Chief Professional Officer (CPO)

Organization: United Way of Onslow County, Inc. (UWOC)

Reports To:  Board Chairman and Executive Committee

I. Purpose of Position:
To be responsible to the Board of Directors for the administration and management of the UWOC; to manage the annual fundraising campaign effort; and to assist in community problem solving and fund distribution.  Plan for and administer the programs of UWOC in accordance with the stated goals and objectives as approved by the Board of Directors.  Provide leadership to the staff in carrying out the policies of the organization as established by the Board of Directors.

II.  Key Responsibilities:

A. Resource Development

The President/CPO is responsible to drive key results in fundraising; to identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors and key leaders of prospective new corporate partners; to leverage personal and professional contacts and relationships into fundraising opportunities; and to promote a culture of fundraising in the organization, both at the staff and board level.

B. Community Impact

The President/CPO is responsible for the overall impact of United Way of Onslow County on the community, with particular emphasis on increasing its capacity to drive the results-based impact.  The President/CPO works closely with the Board to craft and adapt the strategy to achieve this increased impact, including raising the funds to support our mission.  The President/CPO and the Board will establish and build relationships with top leaders in the community, including those representing the highest levels in business, government and non-profit sectors.

C. Strategic Management

The President/CPO serves as the principal resource to the Board of Directors and its key committees and gives strong direction in policy formulation and interpretation.  He/She partners with the Board of Directors and the United Way of Onslow County staff to craft organizational goals and develops strategies to ensure that they are achieved.  The President/CPO ensures coordination and alignment of all United Way activities to include strategic direction in the areas of community impact, resource development, and staff alignment.

D. Organization Management

Overview: The President/CPO is responsible for building and leading high-performing teams, ensuring all teams are aligned and collaborating to achieve organizational results.  He/She will ensure responsibility for the operational and fiscal integrity of the organization in compliance with policies set by the Board of Directors.  The President/CPO assesses organizational capacity to
implement strategies and identify gaps in systems and staffing; directly supervises staff positions and establishes individual goals; works with the Finance Director and board to manage organizational spending, monitors compliance with the financial goals and performance, mitigates financial risks; and ensures that United Way of Onslow County’s goals of inclusiveness and diversity among staff and volunteers are met.

III. Key Functions:
A. Administration
1. Ensure administration and financial affairs of the UWOC are conducted in accordance with acceptable standards of business and regulatory agencies at the lowest possible cost.
2. Administer the annual fundraising campaign, including CPO visits, Campaign Coordinators Trainings, workplace campaign kickoffs, marketing materials, and community education.  Keep the Board of Directors and Fundraising Committee completely informed on all aspects of the campaign.
3. Oversee the administration and assist in the execution of all special events, such as Vine & Dine, Campaign Kickoff, Celebration, and others.
4. Responsible for cultivating relationships with staff, Board of Directors, business executives, campaign coordinators, staff of partner agencies, donors, elected officials, and community leaders.  The President/CPO should be visible and well respected.
5. Obtain and develop competent staff to carry out defined work assignments.  Supervise and direct staff in the performance of their duties and evaluate their performance.
6. Assist Board of Directors in establishing the strategic plan, the policies and procedures, and up-to-date bylaws necessary for effectively operating UWOC.
7. Responsible for monitoring and enforcing the policies and procedures of UWOC.
8. Serve as a mentor and resource to the partner agencies. 
9. Serve as the principal professional resource to the Board of Directors.
10. Make sure that UWOC complies with the membership requirements of United Way Worldwide and United Way of North Carolina.

B. Financial
1. Responsible for the development of an annual operating and sponsorship budget. 
2. Ensure the monthly financial statements, which reflect the tracking of all UWOC income and expenditures, are provided to the Board of Directors.
3. Maintain accurate accountability.
4. Supervise the completion and submission of all required paperwork, such as payroll taxes, insurances, and audits.
5. Oversee the business affairs of the organization to ensure that its funds are expended to the best possible advantage.
6. Ensure that the fund distribution system is equitable to all qualified nonprofits.
7. Manage capital resources, including property, official records, and campaign collections and disbursements.

C. Communications
1. Responsible for thorough and effective communication to the community, Board of Directors, business executives, partner agencies, and volunteers regarding the activities and accomplishments of UWOC.
2. Attract effective volunteers to support the UWOC effort.
3. Continually assess the attitudes of the citizens toward the organization.
4. Keep the Board of Directors informed of issues and conditions affecting UWOC.
5. Develop and maintain a continuous program of public education for enhancing public awareness and understanding UWOC.

IV. Experience and Position Requirements:
• Must possess proven expertise in the field of non-profit and be able to create a vision and leadership for the organization.
• Demonstrated experience in budgeting, accounting, and fundraising. 
• Strong organizational, managerial, and communications skills. 
• Ability to exhibit executive presence and command the confidence and respect of stakeholders
• Experience in building revenue, raising funds and increasing philanthropic support
• Experience in developing partnerships, building teams and conflict management.
• Must demonstrate a high level of intellectual curiosity and a desire to explore new ideas and innovative approaches to solving problems
• Able to work well with volunteers, staff, military leaders, and local business executives. 
• Must be a motivator and team builder, as well as a demonstrated self-starter who can adopt business principals to the nonprofit environment.
• Proficiency using computers and electronics equipment.  Working knowledge of various software, applications, and programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, Donor Tracker, Quickbooks.
• Position requires a valid drivers license and personal auto for local travel within the state and attendance at regional or national meetings.

VI. Qualifications
• Executive leadership experience
• Bachelor’s Degree in nonprofit management, social work, business, public administration, or related field with a minimum of 3-5 years nonprofit management experience. 
• A Master’s Degree with a minimum of 2 years nonprofit management experience is preferred.

VII. Compensation
Compensation commensurate with experience and consistent with organizational policies and resources.
