Community School Coordinator - Hall Fletcher Elementary or Enka Intermediate

The Community School Coordinator roles are part of UWABC’s Community Schools team and works 4 of 5 days onsite at the assigned school. The Coordinator works in concert with the school principal, parents, community leaders and other UWABC staff to promote the school’s vision and the school improvement plan through strengthening the four pillars of an effective community school while holding true to UWABC’s long-term strategic vision.

Position is responsible for supporting student academic achievement by addressing barriers to necessary services and supports, promoting active family and community engagement, and enabling more efficient and effective use of key resources.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Facilitate a Community School Assets and Needs Assessment
Lead community conversations and surveys with key stakeholders
Collaborate with School Partnerships Manager and Data and Evaluation Manager on data analysis, visualization and communication to the school community, partners, and UWABC staff
Utilize the assessment to guide the work of the Resource Team, including potential program investments

Resource Team and Supports
Develop, convene, and guide the Resource Team to align the work with school improvement goals, asset and needs assessment findings, and community school strategies and initiatives
Maintain Resource Rooms
Partner with UWABC departments to build capacity of the Community Schools initiative

Support the School’s Student Success Planning Team
Serve on key school teams focused on student attendance, behaviors and academic performance
Represent community-based organizations and individual volunteers at the school level
Build capacity and infrastructure to link students with beneficial services
Share best practices between the school and community-based organizations and volunteers

Support Student Achievement
Work with school administration and staff to create a positive learning environment
Identify and connect students to quality in-school and out-of-school time programs and volunteer services
Support transition year initiatives

Support School Faculty and Staff
With support of UWABC’s Community Engagement Team, train and coordinate volunteers to support before, during and after-school priorities
Serve on pertinent school teams such as the School Improvement Team
Promote faculty and staff appreciation efforts

Engage and Support Parents and Families
Work with school administration and staff to create a welcoming environment for parents and families
With support of the Family and Community Engagement Manager, host weekly Community Nights and other family events
Co-create, promote and coordinate family and community engagement opportunities

Serve as an active member of the Asheville Buncombe United for Youth (U4Y) Network
Participate in U4Y check-in meetings and professional development
Share relevant U4Y information and strategies with school faculty, staff and volunteers

Partnerships, Data Evaluation, and Continuous Quality Improvement
Collect and organize required data
Communicate progress toward Resource Team and Community School goals
Support partnership protocols and agreements in conjunction with the Community Partnerships Director
Write and produce reports required by UWABC, grantees, school district and U4Y

Other Related Duties and Responsibilities
Provide programmatic supervision to an assigned intern(s) from a local university
Manage an operations budget
Serve on relevant UWABC committees and community groups/collaboratives

Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Education or Social Service or other related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience in education and/or youth development
Demonstrated ability to work in a complex and collaborative environment with cross-sector teams and partners
Valid North Carolina Driver’s License with a driving record that meets insurance requirements
Commitment to the mission and guiding principles of UWABC and ability to model those principles

Technical Skills, Abilities and Other Requirements
Proficient with software, including Google Suite (or similar programs) and strong ability to learn and use a variety of other platforms (e.g.Airtable, Asana)
Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and use a variety of software platforms and new skills
Ability to review and critique multiple organizational sets of data, both qualitative and quantitative
Understanding of the public education system and youth service organizations
Experience leading diverse, interagency teams and/or workgroups working toward a common goal
Previous experience with volunteer management, program development and evaluation
Skilled in public speaking
Work well independently and on teams
Comfort facilitating complex conversations both 1:1 and in groups of all sizes
Ability to work in a complex and collaborative environment with schools and partners
Experience handling sensitive & confidential information
Holds self and other team members accountable for achieving results
Prior experience implementing events

Nice to Have
Multilingual abilities
Understanding of Asheville and Buncombe County school systems and youth service organizations
Experience with any of the following (or similar): Salesforce, Airtable, PowerBI, and PowerSchool or other school data/information systems

This position is exempt from overtime regulations. Typical work hours at the school are 7:30 AM-4:00 PM but may vary each week depending upon evening (and sometimes weekend) family and community engagement events.
