Retooling Your Reserves

It's been a decade since the Great Recession gave way to the last wave of "best practice" regarding financial reserves. A lot of organizations had rebuilt their reserves, in many cases with increased sophistication. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has required organizations to lean on reserves in new ways to navigate otherwise impossible choices. In this session, you will learn about practical tools that have emerged for revising reserve targets, as well as unpack the last decade and current credible frames of thinking regarding how reserves are built, accessed, and invested within your organization.

About the Presenter

Ben Aase is a principal with CliftonLarsonAllen LLP (CLA) and leads the Public Sector Group's national K-12 Education and Consulting practice. He works with a range of nonprofit and governmental clients to drive both organizational and field-wide change and results at the intersection of strategy, finance, and operations. He is a co-founder and board member of Impact Hub MSP, and a director and vice president of the Cargill Foundation. He is former board treasurer of the Givens Foundation for African American literature, and a founder of the Minneapolis Professional Chapter of Net Impact. He is also a review board member for the Social Entrepreneur division of the Minnesota Cup. Ben is licensed by the Standards for Excellence Institute to train, consult, and support on the Standards for Excellence: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector. He has a BA in economics from Colorado College and MBA from the University of Minnesota.
