The Nonprofit's Guide to Sustainable Success: Mastering Governance & Fiduciary Duty

As a nonprofit board member or executive director, your role carries significant responsibility. Beyond the passion for the mission, there’s a legal and ethical obligation to ensure that your organization is financially sound, transparent, and accountable to the public trust. This session is designed to equip you with the tools, insights, and knowledge to fulfill these duties with efficacy, confidence, and integrity. This training will provide board members, executive directors, and team members with the knowledge to navigate complex issues involving budgets, financial statements, and interactions with external parties, such as auditors, donors, and regulators. You will leave empowered to fulfill your fiduciary responsibilities effectively, ensuring your organization thrives while adhering to best practices in governance. Learning Objectives:

Master the Basics of Financial Management

  • Gain a clear understanding of nonprofit financial statements, budgets, and cash flow management.  
  • Learn how to interpret key financial documents and use them as powerful tools for decision-making.

Building a Sustainable Budget

  • Learn how to create and monitor a nonprofit budget that reflects your organization’s values and strategic goals.
  • Understand how to balance resources with mission-critical objectives.  

Financial Oversight & Accountability

  • Understand the financial oversight required to maintain transparency and accountability to stakeholders.  
  • Learn how to spot red flags and take appropriate action to address potential concerns.  

Work with External Parties

  • Learn how to engage with auditors, financial advisors, and other external partners to ensure proper financial oversight and compliance.
  • You’ll also understand how to foster effective relationships with funders and regulatory bodies.  

Legal & Ethical Implications

  • Dive into the legal duties associated with fiduciary responsibility.  
  • Understand the risks associated with non-compliance and how to protect yourself and your organization from potential legal issues.

About the Presenter:

Jackie McLaughlin is a CPA with over 35 years of accounting experience, including 18 years dedicated to nonprofit organizations. Starting her career at KPMG auditing tech startups, she advanced to audit leadership roles in Fortune 500 companies before transitioning to nonprofit financial management.  

At Chazin, Jackie oversees technical reviews, training, and financial reviews, ensuring nonprofits meet the highest standards of fiscal responsibility. An accomplished educator, Jackie spent 10 years as a top-rated instructor for the nation’s largest CPA review provider and has taught financial tools and strategies to small business owners and CPAs.
