BoardSource Training - Governance Effectiveness Series

BoardSource trainings to build board governance best practices, and strengthen the board and staff partnership. Choose a session that works for you.

Session 1 (Jan 25, 9:00 a.m. - Noon)

Leading with Intent - Hear about the latest research on effective nonprofit boards and what it means for your organization. Leading with Intent: 2017 National Index of Nonprofit Board Practices answers these questions and is the latest in BoardSource’s series of studies tracking and analyzing trends in nonprofit board leadership since 1994. All participants will receive access to download a copy of the full report.

Session 2 (Jan 25, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.)

Structuring and Facilitating Better Board Meetings - A lot of governance work is completed during board meetings so these should be as meaningful and efficient as possible. This half-day workshop will focus on best practices around effective nonprofit board meetings. There will be time for participants to share what is already working well, ask questions about what needs improvement, and develop a draft agenda for your next meeting. This workshop will be particularly meaningful to board chairs.

Session 3 (Jan 26, 9:00 a.m. - Noon)

Creating a Constructive Partnership - The first principle of exceptional boards is Constructive Partnership - “Exceptional boards are not just outside examiners, but also powerful forces supporting the organization and its chief executive…” This seminar will be particularly helpful to a team of board members and chief executive attending. Also highlighted will be the Alliance for Nonprofit Management’s report Voices of Nonprofit Board Chairs.

Session 4 (Jan 26, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.)

The Chief Executive’s Role in Governance - A nonprofit chief executive has a unique role in supporting a board of directors and its governance practices, many times as a non-voting ex-officio member of that board. This workshop will create a safe space for CEOs to share and will rely heavily on questions and opinions (aka answers) and introduce a new framework for the chief executive as governance expert, coach, facilitator, and external leader. It is intended for chief executives only.
