Development Associate

 

The Development Associate is an essential position for the Society and is primarily responsible for coordinating the annual fund effort, preparing the annual fund solicitations, managing the donor database with all contributions to the Society, and sending donors timely gift acknowledgements and pledge reminders. The Development Associate will also provide support to the President and other FHS team members, as additional fundraising and stewardship opportunities arise.

Founded by a gift from the Weyerhaeuser Family, the Forest History Society (FHS or Society) is a nonprofit library and archives dedicated to collecting, preserving, and disseminating forest and conservation history for all to use. FHS houses one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of the history of forests and plays a vital role in understanding forests, their evolution and use, and their relationship to today’s environment and economy.

Since 1984, the Society has been headquartered in Durham, North Carolina, benefiting from a longstanding affiliation with Duke University. Within the coming year, FHS will move into a newly constructed headquarters in the Duke Forest – the first facility in the organization’s history built to meet the Society’s unique programming needs. In 2018, FHS anticipates not only wrapping up its capital campaign for this new headquarters, but also completing its most robust annual fund campaign to date, with a goal of raising $330,000 for its important programming.

Position Overview:

The Development Associate’s key responsibilities are to:

• Coordinate the annual fund effort, working with Board and staff leaders.
• Develop segmented, highly detailed donor solicitation and stewardship communications.
• Process donations and prepare acknowledgement letters.
• Ensure timely campaign and annual fund pledge reminders are sent.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date information about campaign and annual fund initiatives on the FHS website.
• Assist staff with social media communications.
• Create and update database records with contributions and prospect information.
• Generate database queries to create prospect/donor lists and reports in support of staff and Board solicitation and stewardship efforts. Assist with prospect research related to individuals, businesses, and foundations.
• Assist with the development of fundraising strategies.
• Assist in preparing summaries for Board and Development Committee meetings.
• Manage the grant reporting schedule and assist with researching and applying for grants.
• Maintain an up-to-date FHS procedure manual for its donor database (eTapestry).


Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational and administrative skills to administer the annual fund program and manage the database accurately, including the ability to generate database queries that drive and support annual and capital giving strategies. The ideal candidate must have strong computer skills, the capacity to manage multiple priorities, the flexibility to assist in the general office operations, and the communication and interpersonal skills to interact with a broad range of academic and professional constituents. Other preferred qualifications for this position include:
• Bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years of related experience in fundraising, or in communications, marketing/sales, community service, education, or nonprofits.
• Experience with eTapestry or similar fundraising software.
• Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel and mail merges.
• Strong writing and proofreading skills.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• An enthusiastic self-starter focused on achieving measurable results.
• An appreciation for libraries, archives, forests, and conservation research.

Salary Range: 

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and competitive with similar positions in nonprofit organizations. This full-time, salaried position offers somewhat flexible hours, and benefits include health insurance, life insurance, three weeks of vacation (four weeks after three years), and a 403(b) savings plan that is matched 2:1 after one year of service.
