Position: Director of Adult Education and Workforce Development

Reports to: Senior Director of Curriculum and Program Accountability

POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Adult Education plans, coordinates, manages, and promotes the Adult Education program by providing opportunities to increase literacy and prepare adults for employment or post-secondary education. Duties include coordinating the Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English as a Second Language programs, managing instructors and volunteer tutors, recruiting and retaining students, managing off-site tutoring and classes, student tracking, tutor training, and student program evaluation. Qualified applicants must possess at least a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Education with masters preferred, and have experience with Title II Adult Education programs.


Oversee the ABE and ESL Program

  • Form and maintain classes in a variety of off-site locations across the triangle.
  • Ensure the ABE and ESL program emphasizes activities increase a student’s ability to transition to postsecondary education and/or obtain employment.
  • Attend community partner meetings as assigned.
  • Oversee instruction and recruit students for ABE and ESL/IELCE classes.
  • Meet regularly with ESL and ABE instructors to review curriculum and student progress. 
  • Ensure data is accurate and entered into the management information system, LACES.
  • Keep up to date with changing WIOA Title II policies. Ensure that TLC is always compliant with federal and state requirements. 
  • Ensure all program grant requirements are met.
  • Submit monthly and quarterly program reports on progress of the Adult Education Program.

ESL and ABE Tutors and Instructors

  • Retain existing and recruit new tutors/instructors.
  • Teach Tutor Training Workshops.
  • Observe tutors and instructors to ensure best practices in adult education teaching.
  • Support tutors and instructors with advice on how to improve instruction as needed.
  • Maintain consistent communication with tutors and instructors. 
  • Ensure necessary and appropriate materials are available for students, instructors, and tutors in the TLC resource library.

Work with ESL and ABE Students.

  • Retain existing and recruit new students for one-on-one tutoring and/or classes.
  • Conduct intake interviews and assessments for new students.
  • Match students with appropriate tutors and/or classes. 
  • Ensure student pre-assessments and post-assessments are conducted as needed.

Instructor of Adult Education

  • Plan and Teach ABE or ESL classes based upon best practices in Adult Education.
  • Other Duties as Assigned


  • Four-year (Bachelor’s) degree in an appropriate discipline preferably education.
  • Experience in Title II Adult Education programs • Teaching experience in Adult Education or K-12.
  • Knowledge of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) for Title II Adult Education
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Strong supervisory skills.
