Preach Beyond the Choir

‘You’re preaching to the choir.’ We’ve all heard that overused cliché. I utter it now to strike through it.

As a full-fledged member of the nonprofit sector – the choir, if you will – I know that nonprofits put $38 billion back into our state’s economy and that 1 out of every 9 people works for a nonprofit.

You know who doesn’t know this? EVERYONE ELSE.

November is Nonprofit Awareness Month. Thirty days to let our communities know what we do, how we do it, and how it affects all of us. Preach it!

Use your podium as a chance to engage more volunteers, cultivate potential donors, and draw notable talent to your cause. Invite the community into your nonprofit to show them – up close – what makes it tick. Or, more personally, invite a friend or student to shadow you for an afternoon to learn about your nonprofit’s goals, programs, and the folks you help.

In addition to the Nonprofit Awareness Month toolkit – ideas and examples for connecting with local media, engaging elected officials, staging an open house or community event – the Center has created a day-by-day calendar for the month. Visit it every day to participate, or check it out periodically to spark your creativity.

Find an unknowing choir and raise your voice in a new chorus.
